In March 2024, Nimrokh Media published a report on the impact of Taliban travel restrictions on women and girls in Afghanistan. The article explains how regulations, including mahram which prohibits women from traveling outside of their homes without a close male relative, not only violates women’s right to freedom of movement but has also become a source of unofficial income for the de facto authorities. The article shares the stories of Afghan women who are turned back when attempting to leave the country because they are not accompanied by a male relative or who were forced to pay bribes to cross-borders or board flights.
