DRG Contributes to Raoul Wallenberg Institute’s Strategic Study on Accountability in Afghanistan

DRG’s Director, Dr. Orzala Nemat, co-authored the Raoul Wallenberg Institute’s 2024 strategic study Accountability for Human Rights Violations and Violations of International Humanitarian Law. Published in September 2024, the report explores historical and current challenges to justice for human rights abuses in Afghanistan.

The study highlights failures in transitional justice, entrenched impunity, and the collapse of judicial structures since the Taliban takeover in August 2021. It calls for strengthened documentation efforts, greater international cooperation, and renewed support for international justice mechanisms, including the International Criminal Court (ICC).Special attention is given to gender-based crimes, urging investigation of gender-based persecution as a crime against humanity, recognition of gender apartheid as a criminal offence, and pursuit of a case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.
