HAMRAH Retreat in Mexico Strengthens Partnership, Trust, and Fosters Learning Exchange with South American CSOs

In October 2024, HAMRAH brought together its cohort members for a transformative retreat in Cancun, Mexico, designed to strengthen internal bonds within the network, reflect on the meaning of “HAMRAH,” and identify future priorities.

During the first session, cohort members shared symbols that represent what HAMRAH means to them, each offering a personal window into their journey. For some, HAMRAH symbolises solidarity with vulnerable communities in Afghanistan—a “safe space” where courage and hope emerge even in times of despair. Others described HAMRAH as a “room to grow,” reflecting both individual and collective development. Images of clasped hands illustrated the cohort’s shared goals and mutual support, capturing the spirit of collaboration and the promise of friendship.

Following the two-day retreat, HAMRAH, in partnership with the Institute for Integrated Transitions (IFIT), facilitated a cross-learning exchange between cohort members and activists from Latin America. Participants from Colombia, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Venezuela came together with HAMRAH’s cohort to discuss the challenges of working in their home countries or in exile. They shared lessons learned, strategies, tools, and tactics, including approaches for operating under sanctions, building transnational solidarity, and collective advocacy to counter authoritarianism and oppression.
