ALO calls for Afghanistan to be referred to the International Court of Justice

Afghan LGBT Organization (ALO) called on Germany to take a stronger stance on human rights violations faced by women, girls, and LGBTIQ+ people in Afghanistan including by supporting the referral of Afghanistan to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The demand was made at the Afghanistan Conference,   “Afghanistan and Us: Despair, Protection, and Political Responsibility, held in Berlin on 19 May 2025.

Speaking alongside Demir Hakan (German Parliament Member) and Katharina Voss (Diakonie Germany) Artemis Akbary, ALO’s Executive Director, advocated for Germany to support the ICJ referral for  violations under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the Convention Against Torture (CAT), noting that the de facto authorities have systematically failed to uphold their obligations under these and other internation human rights treaties.

Akbary also called for the immediate relocation of 400 LGBTIQ Afghans stranded in Pakistan, who were promised safety, yet remain in limbo and at risk of deportation to Afghanistan where they are at risk of serious human rights.
